Two Greek organizations, Tau Kappa Epsilon and Omega Phi Alpha, are raising money for a biology junior’s $30,000 surgery plus travel expenses in China this summer.
The surgery could improve mobility and strength for Kit Bond, who was paralyzed from the waist down in a car accident. He said the surgery is experimental and could recover some sensory or motor functions.
“I’m really excited for the opportunity,” Bond said. “You have to be hopeful. “
TKE is holding a Car Bash tomorrow for students to beat up a car painted crimson and cream, said H.K. Marcom, a fire protection junior. Three hits cost $2 and nine hits cost $5. Students can beat the Boomer car from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Library Lawn.
The fraternity hopes to raise at least $300 to $400, Marcom said.
“We’re just trying to help him out as much as we can,” he said.
OPA will auction food baskets complete with a date Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Oklahoma Room in the Student Union, said OPA President Davilyn Rich.
Twenty-four girls from OPA are making food baskets for the date auction that they hope to sell for $50 to $60 per basket. The group hopes to raise $1000 for Bond.
Rich said no one deserves the surgery more than Bond does.
“A lot of us know him, and he’s a really great guy,” she said.
“Whenever it was brought up that he needed so much money to go, we jumped on it. We are excited about helping him out.”
Bond said he is grateful for the fundraisers.
“My reaction to it is total gratitude,” he said. “I appreciate the efforts these people are putting into it to help get something done.”
