A University of Minnesota study found that students who eat breakfast had a lower body mass index than those who did not.
With the often hectic schedule many college students face, breakfast can become a nuisance or even a luxury.
However, those who skip breakfast in an effort to eat less and lose weight should not follow the pattern of their busy-bodied peers.
The chances of someone having a high body mass index increase were greater when the individual did not eat breakfast, according to the University of Minnesota School of Public Health Project Eating Among Teens (EAT) study which will be published in the journal Pediatrics later this month.
Body mass index, or BMI, is a method for measuring a person’s ratio between height and weight. The study shows that teenagers who eat breakfast are more likely to have a healthy diet and to exercise regularly when compared with those who pass over the early morning meal. This study observed more than 2,200 teenagers during a five-year period. In the past 20 years obesity rates in teens have tripled, which in part relates to poor eating habits, according to the study.
The Seretean Wellness Center has introduced solutions aimed at combating college malnutrition and the “freshmen 15” at OSU. The center implements the solutions through the “Choose Orange” program at on-campus dining locations. Following U.S. Dietary guidelines, “Choose Orange” foods help give students food alternatives for all meals of the day (including breakfast) that have less than 30 percent fat content.
For those interested in calculating their BMI, a calculator, along with other helpful information, is available on the “Choose Orange” Web site at http://chooseorange.okstate.edu. Additionally, the Wellness Center offers nutrition services to anyone seeking advice or counseling. If interested, contact Elizabeth Lohrman at 405-744-6927 to arrange an appointment.
