Thousands of Americans are diagnosed with cancer every year, but thanks to organizations across the country, hope is restored to patients as they fight for a cure.

OSU Coaches vs. Cancer is a campaign teamed with the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches to raise money for cancer patients and research in Oklahoma.

OSU students can buy the “Family Business” poster featuring all three of the Sutton coaches for $5 to benefit Coaches vs. Cancer. Posters are available at all the men’s and women’s games, OSU Bookstore, DuPree Sports, and at the OSU Tulsa and OSU-OKC campuses.

Kendria Cost, chairwoman of the OSU Coaches vs. Cancer Executive Committee, said the posters are a good choice.

“Purchasing a ‘Family Business’ poster is also a great way to give, you actually get something in return for your donation and the poster is a one-of-a-kind item which is sure to be a collector’s item,” said Cost. “It’s not how much a person can give, but that they give.”

The campaign starts Feb. 17 with Women’s Swish Night, a half time event that supports breast cancer research.

The theme for the night is Think Pink, and fans are encouraged to wear pink to support breast cancer awareness. Students are encouraged to come not only to watch a game of Cowgirl basketball, but also to get the opportunity to make a donation to OSU Coaches vs. Cancer. A bucket will be passed around the arena, a perfect time to put in donations.

Fans will also be able to watch a special halftime event; four breast cancer survivors will get one minute to shoot as many baskets as possible. The number of baskets made will be added to the women’s 3 point year end total, which is one way fans can contribute to the campaign (by pledging per 3 point shot made by the men, the women, or both). All proceeds from this halftime event will go to Breast Cancer Research. Then on March 1, it’s Men’s Swish Night, where during halftime, four children will be honored, all of whom are cancer survivors, and whose ages range from 7 to 10 years old. They will get the chance to shoot baskets as well.

Student groups have an opportunity to get involved with OSU Coaches vs. Cancer.

A contest will be held throughout the semester, the group who raises the most money for the campaign will win a pizza party with both the men’s and women’s basketball teams in April.

The SPURS have taken a very active role with OSU Coaches vs. Cancer, they are affiliated with the men’s basketball program, not only do they make and sell basketball programs, they are assisting with poster sales and setting up tables for donations. In addition to all the exciting events taking place, on Men’s Swish Night, celebrity rebounders will be in attendance to help the kids during halftime. Last year’s celebrity rebounders included Andre Williams, Bryndon Manzer, Daniel Bobik, and Bryant “Big Country” Reeves. Cost said, “We understand that most students cannot give a lot of money, but just think how much money we could raise if every student on campus gave $1 toward this cause.”
