Junior outfielder Kati Phillips started 14 games for the Cowgirls last season and was 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts. Phillips also scored six runs.
Things seem better in groups of three, even if they are freshmen.
Ashley Boyd, Alysia Hamilton and Mariah Gearheart each hit a home run during the Cowgirls’ opening weekend tournament in Texarkana, Texas.
The trio helped OSU score 30 runs in six games at the Centenary tournament.
OSU coach Rich Wieligman said that although the team did well with its batting, there are still places to improve.
“I think we had too many strike outs, but that’s early in the year,” he said. “I think that is something that will come along as we play more games.”
With eight players leaving the program in May 2007, the team had to fill a large gap in the roster of 18.
The performance of these younger players will help set the stage for the rest of season as the Cowgirls’ look for another trip to post-season play, it first since 2005.
Wieligman keeps telling his players that the team just needs to keep improving and getting better, and hopefully the team will be playing its best ball when the Big 12 tournament begins.
“It’s a great team,” Wieligman said. “We have some great team chemistry. They rely on each other and trust each other.”
The Cowgirls will test its chemistry again this weekend at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
“As soon as we relax and get used to playing in these games, and playing together as a team, I see us doing some good things,” he said.
