Boone Pickens, chairman and CEO of BP Capital, will receive the Lifetime Achievement award this Saturday. The Leadership Oklahoma organization will hold the ceremony in Oklahoma City.

A state leadership organization will recognize T. Boone Pickens for lifetime achievement and leadership.

Pickens will receive the Lifetime Achievement award this Saturday at the annual Excellence in Leadership Awards and Gala held by the Leadership Oklahoma organization.

Doug Fuller, membership director of Leadership Oklahoma, said Pickens is committed to Oklahoma.

“He has showed his commitment to the state in so many different ways,” Fuller said. “Through his leadership and entrepreneurship, he has invested in and given back to the state of Oklahoma.”

Pickens, the  chairman and CEO of BP Capital, has given away nearly half a billion dollars during his career, according to his Web site, http:/www.boonepickens.com. Pickens gave $165 million to Oklahoma State University in 2005, making him the largest contributor to college athletics in the history of the NCAA.

Pickens, along with three other honorees, will be recognized at the ceremony at the Skirvin Hilton Hotel in Oklahoma City. These honorees include individuals, companies and organizations across Oklahoma that have shown excellence in leadership, Leadership Oklahoma CEO Ann Ackerman said.

Leadership Oklahoma is a statewide non-profit organization that creates and supports Oklahoma’s leaders and exposes them to issues in the state. Members of Leadership Oklahoma nominated Pickens for the Lifetime Achievement award.

Ackerman said an awards committee reviewed and voted on the nominations to decide on the final honorees. The Lifetime Achievement award is given to an individual who has used his or her leadership abilities to improve Oklahoma resident’s lives.

Incoming OSU President Burns Hargis will present the award to Pickens at the event, Ackerman said.

Jay Rosser, Pickens’ spokesman, said, “Boone has deep roots in Oklahoma and has never forgotten the important influence it has had on so many aspects of his life. He has worked hard to give back to the state and is certainly grateful to receive such an important award.”

Fuller said others accepting awards at the ceremony are SemGroup, which is receiving the Business Leadership Award.

SemGroup is a national Tulsa-based company focused on selling, buying and transporting energy in crude and refined oil. Cable company Cox Oklahoma will receive the Statewide Community Award, and  Jari Askins, lieutenant governor, will receive the organization’s 2008 Distinguished Graduate award.

This year’s Excellence in Leadership Awards and Gala will be the 10th year Leadership Oklahoma recognizes and rewards Oklahoma’s outstanding leaders, Fuller said.
