OSU should bring in more speakers

Published: January 30, 2008

Bill Clinton is speaking at OU today. What is missing from this sentence?

A big ‘S’.

The editorial board wonders why OSU can’t get very many prominent speakers. The last major speakers were Cal Ripken Jr. and renknowned biologist E.O. Wilson, both nearly a year ago. Civil rights leader Mary Berry’s recent appearance was appreciated, but there doesn’t appear to be anyone else for the rest of the semester.

Former President of Mexico Vicente Fox is speaking Feb. 5 but the majority of OSU students have to travel more than 50 miles to see him.

Not to mention the inconvenience, these events are infrequent. It is embarrassing and silly to have to make a road trip to another city to see people who should be a coming here more often.

Part of going to college is to become more knowledgeable about the world in general.

Education goes beyond what is learned in our majors, and students need exposure to people and things that would increase their social and cultural awareness. Bringing more prominent figures to the OSU campus could be one step in that direction, and increase the value of an OSU education.
