The Oklahoma State soccer team went undefeated on the weekend by drawing the Kansas Jayhawks on Friday night and securing a come-from-behind victory over the first place Missouri Tigers Sunday afternoon, with both games going to overtime.
The Cowgirls dominated the Jayhawks but the game ended 2-2. Kansas’s Shannon McCabe scored in the 15th minute to open the scoring before Cowgirl sophomore midfielder Siera Strawser equalized in the 31st off of redshirt freshman Annika Niemeier’s cross.
It was Strawser’s second goal of the season and Niemeier’s fourth assist.
Kansas would again take the lead in the 59th minute when Nicole Cauzillo scored off a Monica Dolinsky free kick.
All-American senior midfielder Yolanda Odenyo scored her third goal of the season for the Cowgirls off a cross from sophomore forward Kasey Langdon in the 71st minute to draw the teams level. It was Langdon’s fifth assist of the season.
The teams played through both overtime periods with no further scoring and the game remained a 2-2 draw.
Cowgirl head coach Colin Carmichael said the team could have left Lawrence with a victory.
“Kansas is a real good team, their record is a little deceiving, and it’s a real tough place to play,” Carmichael said. “To be honest, you could say we deserved to win the game; we had some chances we couldn’t finish, and they capitalized on their chances.
“We’re a little disappointed, but not with the performance.”
The Cowgirls came from behind to beat the No. 12 ranked Missouri Tigers 2-1 in overtime Sunday afternoon in Columbia.
Missouri defeated Oklahoma 3-0 Friday night.
The Tigers scored first in the 41st minute with Meghan Pfeiffer finding the back of the net for the first time this season.
Strawser continued her scoring form as she notched her third goal of the season in the 57th minute to draw the Cowgirls level. Langdon collected her team-leading sixth assist on Strawser’s goal.
Langdon wasn’t finished, as she went on to score her fourth goal of the season four minutes into the first overtime to end the game and give the Tigers their first Big 12 loss.
The Cowgirl victory is the first game the Tigers have failed to win at home this season.
After the weekend, the Cowgirls are 9-3-2 overall and 3-2-1 in league play. The Cowgirls are undefeated in overtime this season, with a 3-0-2 record in games going beyond 90 minutes.
“It’s great,” Carmichael said of handing Missouri their first Big 12 loss. “Our goals for the season were to be at the top of the conference and compete for the Big 12 championship and get as far as we can in the NCAA tournament.
“Missouri is a good team, they are very physical, they are very organized, and they are tough to play against.”
“In the first half, we were a little disappointed with how we played, so we came out with a little more fire in the second half, and at the end of the game, I felt like we deserved it.
“We we’re thrilled, it’s a good victory.”
