Cowgirl soccer defeats SMU

The Cowgirls bounced back from a disappointing tie Friday to record a solid  victory against the Southern Methodist University Mustangs on Sunday afternoon.

Senior midfielder Sasa Jackson scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 8th minute to give the Cowgirls the lead.

The ball was knocked into the box where it took a couple of deflections before Jackson was able to score.

Sophomore forward Kasey Langdon added a goal  by slotting in a cross from freshman forward Katie Richardson in the 21st minute.

In the 68th minute, Cowgirl senior forward Adriane Radtke and SMU forward Kimber Bailey were shown yellow cards for an altercation after a hard collision.

Radtke and Bailey’s twin sister, Krystal, collided at the shoulder. Kimber Bailey ran and violently shoved Radtke to the ground.

Krystal Bailey was carted off the field with a sling on her left arm after lying on the ground for a few minutes.

The No. 14 Cowgirls are 6-1-1 and have allowed only three goals in eight games while scoring 21 goals.

The Cowgirls dominated Colorado College on Friday night for much of the game, but the score remained 0-0 through overtime and the teams walked away with a draw.

The Cowgirl offense had no trouble getting shots off in either game, outshooting Colorado College 26-4 and SMU 18-1.

Colorado College goalkeeper Geneva Sills racked up 11 saves, and SMU goalkeeper Ashley Gunter recorded seven.

Cowgirl head coach Colin Carmichael said he was happy with how his team responded after a tiring and disappointing draw on Friday.

“We just wanted to bounce back from Friday; we actually played very well Friday night, we just couldn’t score,” Carmichael said. “The big emphasis today was to finish your chances early, and we did.

“We probably could have made it a little bit easier on ourselves if we scored another couple goals, but overall I’m happy; we played against a solid SMU team and got the win.”

Jackson was also disappointed with Friday’s draw, but said she thought the team played well.

“It’s very important, especially coming after a tie on Friday which we should’ve finished some chances and won there,” Jackson said.

Richardson said it was imperative for the team to respond well to such physical contests.

“It’s real important, every game is a battle,” Richardson said. “There are no easy games this season, so we got to come out every game.”

Carmichael said he believes the team can stay with even the most physical teams it will face.

“It’s not what we are best at, we like to get the ball down and play, if we have to, if we got to battle, it’s part of the game and I think our kids can do it,” Carmichael said.

Jackson agreed.

“Definitely, I think we can definitely handle our own and protect each other on the field,” Jackson said.
