Students of OSU be weary, our rights are in danger. Beginning July 1 we can no longer stand on campus and enjoy a cigarette.
This new policy is an outrage and a direct violation of our rights.
The Student Government Association, which passed the tobacco free recommendation 21-9, appears to be doing a job, but is it an effective job?
I didn’t vote for these people to take away my rights, I voted for them to protect my rights.
It seems to me that we voted the wrong people into power once again. A mistake that isn’t uncommon here in America.
Designated smoking areas will be available on campus, unfortunately these designated areas are strategically place around dorms that house a large number of foreign students.
How is designating specific areas for smoking supposed to help improve OSU student and faculty health? This just means students who smoke are going to have to walk further away from their building and probably be late for their classes.
If the only place to smoke on campus is at these designated areas, then shouldn’t there be more areas available on campus and not just the residential life areas? It would make sense to allow students to still have the right to step out of class or the library and light up.
I think that each building on campus should allow a designated area for smoking within 100 feet. This would allow people who don’t want to be around cigarette smoke to avoid these areas as well as allow people their natural right to enjoy a cigarette.
This may be an issue of health, but aren’t people allowed to be as healthy or unhealthy as they like? This is an issue of rights, pure and simple.
What’s next SGA? Maybe you can make smokers drink out of separate water fountains because their breath stinks, or even make them ride in the back of the bus because smokers are obviously lower life forms.
If the smell of smoke really bothers you, then just walk a few feet and problem solved. This campus is big enough to find an area where no one is smoking. In fact I bet if you were to walk around campus right now, you probably wouldn’t be able to smell but a small whiff of cigarette smoke.
If OSU is attempting to become the “healthiest campus in America” then wouldn’t it make more sense to ban greasy fried food from campus? It seems like a waste of money and material to inform all the people of the new policy and construct these new smoking shelters.
I certainly hope that my increased tuition isn’t funding this new policy.
The policy brings me to conclude that our rights as students and as Americans are being taken away from an institution that we pay good money to attend. When voting comes around for a new SGA cabinet I think we should look to put people in power that will protect our rights rather than reduce them.
Come July 1, our right to smoke on campus will be no more.

That idea that the new policy of smoking sections putting out individuals rights is a bit off place. You said in your article that anyone not wishing to breath in second-hand smoke could simply walk around the smoker. But why should the non-smoker have to change what he/she does because of the decisions that the smoker makes? Anyone who picks up thier first cigarette and begins to smoke makes a conscious decision to change their lifestyle. This is simply a part of that changing lifestyle. You also complained about students who smoke having to walk more to their classes due to the new smoking areas. Am I to assume that these students not only do not have a problem putting tar and rat poison in their lungs, but they also wish to get no excersise? Perhaps they could use a little more to stay alive, but then again, they must not be interested in that, being smokers and what not.
Get used to it. That’s what the State wants. The more that Americans are conditioned to being told what they can [and can't] do, the easier it will be for the State to dictate other conduct. They’ll tell us that it’s for the “war on terror,” or that it’s for the “war on drugs,” or, maybe, that it’s simply “for the children,” but, under the guise of either, what is really happening is that more and more intrusive conduct on the part of the State will be met by less and less resistance by the People.
When this occurs, the Bill of Rights can easily become the Bill of Privileges, subject to the dictates of the State.
Always remember, the State desires a passive People - a People who have given up on individualism - and that is how Socialism, or any other form of Statism, will rear its ugly head. And, even worse, it’s how the People will come to accept same. The seeds of Socialism, and of any other form of Statism, are illiteracy, ignorance, passivity - and conditioning.
Hmmm . . . Let’s turn that headline and first paragraph around and see how it reads . . .
“Smokers putting out non-smokers’ rights”
“Students of OSU be weary [sic], our rights are no longer in danger. Beginning July 1 we can stand on campus and no longer detest a cigarette.”
I really like the way that sounds . . .
I would just like to state the fact that most smokers try to be considerate of others and smoke in out of the way places so non-smokers don’t have to walk through their smoke…
Then again judging by the comments on this, common courtesy is obviously not understood by these people.
Let’s get one thing straight, this isn’t a health issue. Inhaling a little bit of second hand smoke, while outdoors, isn’t very hazardous to your health, and anyone who says so is either lying or as dumb as Miss South Carolina. For the record, I agree with anti-smoking laws in the workplace, where people who don’t wish to smoke are subjected to large amounts of second hand smoke. That’s not what this new law is about. This is about one group of people who don’t like another group of people. Some people are offended by the cigarette smoke. Okay, I’m offended by ALOT of stuff on campus; Preacher Bob, muffin tops, people who don’t shower (try working in the Engineering South basement). Are you going to ban them all? What about the fatty food in our student union? The AMA has new research that shows that one of the leading factors causing obesity is living in an obese culture (genetics was #1). The AMA says that if I live around fat people, I am more likely to become fat myself! Are you going to make Jim Bob stop eating that cheeseburger because it is hazerdous to my health? I’m guessing no, cause the SGA likes their cheeseburgers. Like I said before, this isn’t about student’s health or the fast food would be the first thing to go. This is about one group of people who don’t like another group of people. The world could certainly use a little bit of tolerance right now, don’t ya think?
