Orange Pages: Stillwater's Little Black Book

Say hello to the familia for me

Published: August 24, 2007

It’s the end of the first week of college for freshmen. I encourage them to call Mom and Dad and let them know how it went. Or send a letter. Let me provide an example:

Dearest Ma and Pa,

I’ve just finished my first week at OSU. When I got here, I was a bit baffled by how many people were on this campus. There are more students than people in our town!

Everyone I’ve met has been really friendly so far. In fact, on my first day in Stillwater, someone told me I was smarter than I looked! I’m so happy to be making friends.

Dorm life is OK. I like my roommate and we have a lot in common. Her boyfriend spends the night a lot, but it’s cool. It’s like a slumber party and he’s never in the way because they sleep in the same bed. They both must have pretty bad allergies, though. Nightmares too because they breathe really heavily, moan, rustle around and talk in their sleep. It’s so weird.

My first day of class was a blur. I got up extra early to get ready. I had to look good-the right skirt, UGGs and makeup. You never know when you’re going to meet your future husband. I mean, he could be sitting next to you in class, right?

I looked really good for my Monday 8:30 class. My hair was teased and sprayed to perfection and my outfit matched and complemented my eyeshadow. Why, when I got to the crosswalk, all the cars and buses stopped. I think they were all staring at me because I looked that good! I am a little worried about my classes, though. When I raised my hand in class and asked my professor if he was going to print notes for us every day, he seemed to get annoyed. It’s like he expects us to sit there and write down like everything he says! How are we supposed to do that? He talks a lot! Like, we never, ever had to do that in high school, so why make us in college?

And, like two of my professors don’t even speak English! I can’t even understand them! How am I supposed to learn anything? I think if they’re going to teach, they should have to know English. Like, this is America. Speak American, OK?

But it wasn’t all bad. I met a cute boy! He thought it was so cool that I was a gymnast for all those years. He said he wants to see how flexible I am one night this weekend. I hope he calls me soon.

Well, I need to get going. It’s Friday night and time to party! Some of my new friends are taking me to a club called The Dragon’s Lair. I don’t know much about it, but a lot of people seem to have heard of it, so it must be pretty cool. I’ll let you know how that goes.

Give my love to the goats.

Love,

Princess
