Robinson to see more playing time this season

Published: August 24, 2007

For typical backup quarterbacks, most of their time is spent on the sideline with a headset on calling plays or sitting on the bench watching the game.

Oklahoma State’s Zac Robinson is not a typical backup quarterback.

As a sophomore, Robinson is expected to get a lot of playing time, but not entirely as a quarterback.

He will play wide receiver and running back, also.

“It feels good to be involved with this offense and help do whatever I can,” Robinson said.

He helped the offense chug along last season when starter Bobby Reid missed two games because of injuries.

Robinson was called into the homecoming game against Texas A&M when Reid suffered an injury early in the first half.

He almost led the Cowboys to a victory against the Aggies, but a blocked extra point in overtime spoiled that chance.

Robinson was again called to duty in the last home game of the season against the Sooners.

This time, he was put into the game plan to offset the Sooners’ defense and give the offense an added weapon.

Robinson played well and was on the field in the waning minutes of the game to give the Cowboys a chance to win that game as well.

His pass attempt in the final seconds to D’Juan Woods fell incomplete in the back of the end zone to prevent a Cowboy victory.

Because of these performances, offensive coordinator Larry Fedora liked enough of what he saw to implement Robinson into game plan for the 2007-08 season.

Fedora said Robinson will get about 20 plays a game in multiple sets

“Zac expects to play in every game,” Fedora said. “He prepares himself to be the quarterback every game, and we have a wide array of things we can do with Zac because he is very talented in a lot of different ways. He can throw, catch and he’s not a bad center, also.”

Robinson came to OSU as a quarterback, but in high school he was a wide receiver before being converted to quarterback.

Because of this, Reid said he thinks Robinson helps give the offense a boost when he enters the game.

“He is a much better athlete than I am,” Reid said. “The things that he does, he is real good at it, so I like it when he comes in.

“To tell you the truth, when we get out [to practice] and [Robinson] comes onto the field, it brings a spark to the offense. He may not notice, but I notice.”

Adarius Bowman, Bobby Reid, Dantrell Savage, Keith Toston and Brandon Pettigrew have all been referred to as possible X-factors for this season.

But if last season is any indication, Robinson might take that title by the end of the year.
