The 2007 Cowgirl soccer season begins this Saturday as the team travels to Fort Worth, Texas, to battle the TCU Horned Frogs in an exhibition game. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.
The Cowgirls, fresh off the greatest season in team history, feel they are well prepared for the season to come.
Although the matchup against TCU is an exhibition game, the Cowgirls are treating it as if it’s an actual game.
Coach Colin Carmichael said he is hopeful for the experience gained from a preseason game.
“This is a really great chance for us to gauge our fitness and get ready for the season,” Carmichael said.
Practice this week has been profitable toward gearing up for the game. Carmichael said he believes his squad is in great shape.
“Practice has been good,” Carmichael said. “They came into this really fit, and we shall see if our hard work pays off this weekend.”
Carmichael said he thinks the scrimmage is a great opportunity to see how well the players can perform against good competition.
He said he plans to use many of the younger Cowgirls in the game.
“We are going to give our new players a chance to show us what they can do,” Carmichael said.
Replacing last year’s leading scorer, Jesyca Rosholt, is not as daunting a task as one might think.
Cowgirl coaches and players said they are confident in their abilities to get the job done.
“It will be a team effort,” Carmichael continued. “Last year, Jesyca scored six goals, but we had several other girls score 4 or 5 goals.”
Carmichael said he believes his team’s greatest strength rests in their hard-work and determination.
“Our team just plays well together, and the way they fight for each other remains (our greatest strength),” he said.
The Cowgirls hope to come away with many valuable lessons from the exhibition game against TCU.
One of the goals for the team going into the scrimmage is to finish more scoring chances.
“We create a lot of opportunities, but I really wish we could finish more and score more goals,” Carmichael said.
Niccole Grimaldi said she was confident about preparation for the game.
“I feel really good,” Grimaldi said. “We had a lot of really good practices this week leading up to this game and I believe our team is shaping up really well.”
Grimaldi said she personally is looking to “get in there and get it done.”
Carmichael said the key to success will come from everyone working together.
“We can get it done when we work as a team,” Carmichael said.
