As the temperatures outside began to rise this summer, so did the media coverage of 2008 presidential hopefuls.

Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama competed against each other to raise funds. While John Edwards was campaigning, his wife, Elizabeth, publicly battled cancer and conservative political commentator Ann Coulter.

Republican hopefuls Rudy Giuliani, Fred Thompson and Mitt Romney led the polls while Clinton, Obama and Al Gore were leading the polls for the Democratic nomination, according to http://www.pollingreport.com.

Mattel recalled 9 million Chinese-made toys Tuesday, including Polly Pockets play sets and Batman action figures, because of dangers to children from lead paint or tiny magnets that could be swallowed, according to The Associated Press.

Drew Carey came on down as the next host for “The Price Is Right.” The last episode with Bob Barker aired June 15. Barker hosted the show for 35 years, according to the CBS Web site.

Britney Spears kept the grocery-store tabloids profitable this summer with her notoriously bad fake hair, cellulite-flaunting swimwear and erratic behavior during interviews.

A girl’s feet were cut off June 21 when a free-fall thrill ride malfunctioned at the Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom Amusement Park in Louisville, Kentucky, according to CNN. A cord wrapped around the 16-year-old’s feet and severed them at her ankles while she was on the “Superman Tower of Power.”

Celebrities kicked off the Live Earth concert series July 7 in an attempt to raise public awareness and find a solution to combat global warming. The event was spread across all seven continents and involved more than 100 music artists, according to http://www.liveearth.org.

A Minneapolis bridge spanning the Mississippi River collapsed Aug. 1. Twelve people were killed when the bridge, which was undergoing concrete repairs, fell during rush- hour traffic. Diving crews continue to search for the body of the last believed victim, who is remarkably the only worker reported missing in the collapse.

On Aug. 6, a mine collapse in Utah trapped six miners and drew the attention of the nation. As rescuers worked to open the blocked mine tunnel, another collapse killed three rescue workers and injured six. Contact has not been made with the miners since the first collapse.

In sports, Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants has hit his 760th career home run.  On Aug. 7, Bonds broke Hank Aaron’s record of 755 home runs.

One of the two trams that shuttle tourists to the top of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis will remain closed at least seven to nine weeks after a snapped cable caused a power outage that trapped roughly 200 people inside the landmark for up to three hours July 21, according to The Associated Press.
