Eating disorders not the way to get a summer body

Published: May 01, 2007

It’s getting closer to summer and we all know what that means — swimsuits, the beach and skimpier clothing.

Of course, not everyone was born with a body that looks fabulous in summer wear, so some take extremely dangerous measures to look just right for these sunny months.

Unfortunately, men and women will cope with eating disorders during the vacation and even into the next semester.

It is imperative that people talk with their friends if they suspect any unhealthy behaviors.

Don’t be embarrassed to ask them what’s going on. Be there for them by listening to them, but don’t promise to be silent while they continue to suffer from an eating disorder.

You may be wanting to “help them” by not saying anything in case they would get angry with you but that decision could prove fatal for your friend.

Be there for your friends, talk with them but don’t judge them. Remember, this is a disorder, so berating them won’t fix the situation or lessen the problem.

Remember eat and exercise to stay healthy as we head into summer vacation.

Don’t forget to grab some pancakes as we race toward the end of finals week, too.
