A letter of thanks to a global warming frontman

Published: April 03, 2007

Dear Mr. Al Gore,

As an environmental management student and a budding environmental activist, I would like to follow your example.

Your politics inspire me and your environmental activism emboldens me. I recently got hold of your “Inconvenient Truth,” which I really enjoyed. I have attended a few environmental and geographical classes in which we sought to define and understand the topic of global warming.

I have no doubt that this is the area in which you will be best remembered. I say this with the understanding that you began your mission several decades ago and politics served to grease your efforts.

I want to emulate you upon return to my native Kenya. I need advice on whether to begin with politics or activism. I am confident that my educational pursuits are the cornerstone of where I anticipate going socio-politically.

Mr. Gore, politics propelled you to national fame, but the award-winning global warning documentary has projected you into international limelight. Global warming transcends borders, and associated disasters don’t discriminate between Republicans and Democrats.

Your intentions to take the debates and concerts to the Capitol are noble and parochial. Noble because that’s where U.S environmental policies emanate and policy makers need your warning. It is parochial because the masses that reside farther away and need the global warning message have not heard and heeded your warning.

Mr. Gore, you need to use more of your tenacity to gore world leaders because local, national and regional actions affect global actions.

I advise you to diversify your audience, Mr. Gore. Confining yourself to the politicians in Washington D.C. may not attain the much-needed results.

There are thousands of young bright minds who are the future leaders who need to spread the warning. Your talk at OU should be an eye-opener to where we need you.

Do not be content with where or what you have achieved so far. A Nobel Prize might be on the way, but you’ve got to earn it by venturing out.

The so-called third world countries are always grappling with issues of sustainable development. It is not easy, but you have shown the world that it is possible.

I promise to help in spreading the global warning. Thank you.
