Franz Ferdinand can’t get much better than this

Published: October 05, 2005

Franz Ferdinand is back to give music fans another year of obnoxious dance music with its new album, “You Could Have It So Much Better.”

It has only been a year since Franz Ferdinand released its self-titled debut that significantly changed the expectations of pop music. On its sophomore album, Franz brings more of the same, and the same is still terrific.

After a full listen of “You Could Have It So Much Better,” the most noticeable difference is the slower-paced songs including “Walk Away,” “Fade Together” and “Eleanor Put Your Boots Back On.” The notion to include a larger variety of song types is a good one, but proves to be a weakening blow to the original Franz sound, which was fun dancing music.

Aside from the much-needed change in sound, the rest of the songs on “You Could Have It So Much Better” are all just as revolutionary as the first album.

Rebellious anthem “The Fallen” opens the album with vicious guitars and lead singer Alex Kapranos asking “What’s wrong with a little destruction?”

“Do You Want To” is the first single off the new album and is reminiscent of Franz’s debut single “Take Me Out.” What starts out as a song that just “sounds” like Franz Ferdinand quickly shifts into an all-out onslaught of dance/pop utopia.

Of all slower tracks, “Fade Together” stands out with an easy-going guitar strum and an even simpler chorus “Let’s fade together /Let’s fade forever.” The beauty about Franz Ferdinand is its ability to make amazing songs that appear so simple.

Overall, “You Could Have It So Much Better” brings Franz Ferdinand back to the top of pop music. The idea to add more slower-paced songs makes the album slightly less intense as its predecessor, but still strong enough to stand on its own. Fans of pop music made for the right reasons will surely find a way to Franz’s new album as soon as possible.
