For the first time in nearly 40 years, the Oklahoma State Cowboys earned the right to celebrate a conference championship.
After cruising past Texas A&M 70-41, the Cowboys earned their first Big 12 Conference Championship, and the first conference title since 1965.
“We won the Big 12 Championship outright, and that’s something that hasn’t been done in a long time,” said guard Tony Allen. “I’m just happy to be here, happy to be a part of this team and happy to be able to participate in the Big 12 Championship.”
As soon as the game ended, the players celebrated at halfcourt while the trophy was brought out for the presentation.
With championship shirts and hats on, the players and staff posed with the trophy, and coach Eddie Sutton spoke to the 12,686 fans in attendance as the players huddled around the trophy.
“This is something you’ll remember for the rest of your life,” Sutton said.
Allen then made his way up a ladder to begin cutting down the net.
Following Allen was guard John Lucas.
Lucas transferred from Baylor after incidents took place off the court last year.
“This is my first time, but I know I want to keep doing it,” Lucas said. “I love the feeling. This is something I used to watch when I was little when Duke was winning all those titles. Today I got a little taste of it.”
The Cowboys sealed at least a share of the title after defeating Texas last Monday.
OSU won the award on the same day that seniors were being honored in their last game in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
“I’m really proud of this team, and especially the seniors and what they did,” said junior forward Ivan McFarlin. “This is just one of the three things that we’re trying to get. I’m too excited right now, I’m just going to go ahead and enjoy the day and get ready for the Big 12 Tournament.”
The Cowboys will be the No. 1 seed in the Big 12 Tournament and will play their first game Friday at noon.
