Tumbleweeds slowly roll by lecterns all across campus as elongated shadows visibly stretch across the library lawn. Could there be anymore signs this obvious that it is officially dead week?
Can it really be dead week? It seems like only a few weeks ago I was still collecting course syllabi and trying to remember where all of my classes kept moving. Although it is a symbol of the end, it really is a time we all hate to look forward to.
Everyone is frantically trying to complete term papers and projects, scrambling to find old assignments only worth half-credit now and of course there are a million people in each computer lab desperately needing to print out a report. Which reminds me, the campus is now running with a near silent hum, and everyone you see is going through a slow-motion panic the second they realize finals are near.
As stressful or emotionally challenging this final week before finals can be, don’t allow it to take control. Sure, every professor wants to squeeze in those last couple of chapters they forgot, and you wish you could truly forget. We all have that last thing or project to finish, but we can put it off for a few more days. But don’t let any of it get you down.
In the short time that I have been a student at OSU, I have been lucky enough to meet a lot of people. Some were better than others, but overall the campus is inhabited by a good crowd of people.
I know I usually portray the university as some sort of night stalker that slowly sneaks into your wallet at night and sucks out all of your money. And I still hold firm to my nightmarish comparisons, but there are a lot of nice people who, even though they are affiliated with OSU, are decent and have emotions. These are people who are capable of things like caring and friendship, which makes them better friends than you realize.
I have had a pretty bad semester, academically speaking, and might need a lot of help once my grades appear in the mail. Hopefully, not to wish anyone the same harm, I’m not alone. My mantra before a test this semester was “It’s only one F.” Yet after chanting that little ditty all semester I found I wasn’t the only one singing and chanting to their doom. But that isn’t as bad as you think.
People make mistakes, pencils have erasers and life goes on. These aren’t just cute little expressions coined by television anymore. The friendly people I mentioned earlier aren’t just figments of my imagination conjured up by a bottle of model cement, they really do exist. And they are the people that come up to campus each day and sit in an office until you realize you’ve made a mistake.
Lots of people do make mistakes. Not many people are capable of having a perfect semester each semester. There are always options out there and people willing to help you, all you have to do is ask. I know asking might be the hardest part, but it’s a lot better than stressing over a single class or one assignment. There are always things you can do to make it up.
If you have to take the same class over again, do it. Only this time show up. If you need an extension or extra help with something, go to your professor’s office and ask. Most professors are people and can help you out, that’s why they have office hours. If you don’t know where to start looking for this magical help, go to your adviser’s office. They do more than help you enroll.
OSU has so many options and resources available to the students. You might as well go and use them since you’re paying for them. If you have ever wondered where your tuition goes, it’s because you haven’t looked around. Office upon office on this campus houses people who spend their workday helping you. The only thing is you have to meet them in the middle. As nice and friendly as these people are, they aren’t psychic. So if you don’t ask for their help, you’ll never get it.
Just a little something to keep in mind as we all begin to ready ourselves for finals. I wish everyone the best of luck and hope your grades are better than mine.
