Just the classics

Published: May 01, 2001

Three groups from the Oklahoma State University Chamber Music Ensemble played music by three different composers.

Lawrence Stomberg, assistant professor of music, said the students in the ensemble have been working for the better half of the semester on the concert.

He said it has been gratifying to work with the students this semester.

Some of the students are music majors, and some play for the love of it.

“The students are doing a great job of bringing out the full character of the music,” Stomberg said.

The first piece played, String Quintet in C Major, K. 515 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, featured two violins, two violas and a cello.

The second was “July” by Michael Torke, which featured four saxophones.

At times, the piece resembled a rock ’n’ roll song with varied beats.

“His music is very difficult,” Stomberg said.

“A lot of the times it sounds like rock ’n’ roll. We’re not used to that sort of thing.”

The final piece, String Quintet in G Major, Op. 77 by Antonin Dvorak, featured a double bass, something not often found in chamber music, Stomberg said.

At points, the music had a slow, romantic feel, and at other times, the piece was fiery and fast.

Lynn Baker, Stillwater resident, said she enjoyed the performance and every other performance this year.“I loved it,” Baker said.

“It was great. I did learn something new tonight — I didn’t know there were different saxophones.”

Caroline Cox, management information systems sophomore and cellist, said she enjoys playing in the ensemble.

“I thought we did really well,” Cox said.

“I got to play in two different groups. It was really neat to do the contrast — one was a classical piece, and one was a more romantic piece.”

Cox, who also plays in the orchestra, said both ensembles have a different feel.

“It is a very different atmosphere,” she said.

“In the chamber ensemble, it is much more soloistic.

“In the orchestra, it is so much more broad you feel like you could hide, but in the chamber group, it is much more exposed,” she said.
