Bidding farewell

Published: May 01, 2001

Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Reynolds Stadium. The series was originally supposed to be a two-game set, but Wednesday’s game was canceled in order to comply with the NCAA limit of 56 regular season games.

“There are no more ball games for us to put our uniforms on and walk out on the field and go through the motions,” OSU coach Tom Holliday said. “Every game we play the rest of the way, we need to go out and win. And it’s not just league, it’s the whole picture.”

The Cowboys (34-15) are coming off a 15-5 rout of Baylor on Sunday.

OSU lost the first two games of the series 6-5 on Friday and 7-5 on Saturday, but closed the series out with a big win to end the weekend.

“Coming out on a Sunday after you’ve already lost two games, it’s hard to get motivated when you know you can’t win the series,” said centerfielder Jimbo McAuliff. “But the one game is important. A win’s a win, even though you can’t win the series.”

The Cowboys welcomed Nebasett Brown and Jose Virgil back into the lineup on Sunday, bumping their offense back up to full force.

Both players had to sit out this past week’s Arkansas game and the first two games of the Baylor series after a fight in the Texas A&M game.

Holliday said it was good to have the batting order back in place, and it helped his team just seeing everybody back together on the field.

“In the first two (Baylor games) we had two of our sluggers out of the lineup,” Holliday said. “It was an empty feeling trying to generate offense.”

But with them back, the club did not appear to have trouble generating offense. OSU scattered 12 hits in Sunday’s win, including four home runs.

Since today’s game will be OSU’s last regular-season home game, it could be the last chance many fans have to see the senior players.

“It’s gone so fast,” McAuliff said. “Four years, it doesn’t seem like it at all. (Today) is our last home game so it’ll be special, I think.”

Brigham Young (29-17) travels to Stillwater fresh off a weekend sweep over San Diego State. The Cougars put up a lot of offense in those games, winning by scores of 15-9, 17-5 and 13-12.

Offensively, BYU is led by outfielder Matt Carson, who tops the team with 16 home runs and 60 RBIs. He also has a .349 batting average.

Third baseman Kainoa Obrey is batting .387 with nine homers and 42 RBIs. His 16 doubles lead the team.

Shane Belliston has a 19-game hitting streak, and is hitting .321 on the season.

Nate Fernley will get the nod as BYU’s starter today. The righthander is 12-2 on the season, and has posted a 3.14 ERA. He has 106 strikeouts in 109 innings pitched.

The last time these two teams met was in 1999. OSU won both games, beating the Cougars by scores of 20-15 and 6-4.
