Not much has been done to stop it because it’s not a topic that many people like to talk about. Most people prefer to sweep it under a rug and pretend that it doesn’t exist or that it won’t affect them. The truth is that it affects many more people than we realize.
Porn exists all around us and is more readily available than ever. No longer does one need to dress up incognito to go to the convenience store for their plastic-wrapped porn magazine. No, all one needs to do is log onto the Internet and let the smut search begin. This can all be done without leaving the comfort and privacy of one’s computer room. Yet, this is where things get dangerous.
When no one is watching, it’s oh-so-easy to open a few naughty sites to satisfy the lustful nature. However, pornography is not as simple as a few looks here and there. Pornography is like an enormous python that slowly wraps around a person, suffocating him little by little.
By the time a person realizes that he has a problem with porn, it is too late. He’s been sucked into the whirlpool of putrescence and cannot get out. Porn addiction has consumed him.
Perhaps, you think that this is a bit farfetched. “Is porn really like that? I’ve looked at porn, but I’m not consumed by it.”
That may be the case, but consider the infamous murder and rapist Ted Bundy. He started with a Playboy magazine and ended up in the electric chair for the rape and murder of more than 10 women. Do you still want to tell me that porn isn’t dangerous?
Pornography affects the way that men see women. After getting tangled in the web of porn, men no longer see women as creatures that deserve respect and dignity. Instead, women are seen as mere pieces of meat. This is not the way it should be.
Many of you think I may be writing this column hypocritically. “SuperDave, you are here bashing porn, yet you probably look at it every night!” Maybe a few years ago that might have been true.
Yes, I have seen more than I need to see thanks to our good friend the Internet, and I deal with hormones and temptations just like every other man on this planet. I’ve personally resolved (with God’s help) that porn can’t be a part of my life. I’m here today to tell you that it is possible to be free from the chains of pornography.
If you are wrapped up in it and feel hopeless, you need not stay there. If you haven’t gotten into it, then let me caution you to avoid it like the plague. Don’t think, “Oh, just one look won’t hurt.” I’m sure Ted Bundy thought the same thing as he opened his first Playboy.
Unfortunately, the clandestine, slippery nature of porn makes it difficult to defeat. We cannot seem to get past the First Amendment when it comes to banning such filth. Besides, how many on Capitol Hill have been corrupted by pornography in their private lives? Thus the defeat of porn must begin with individuals willing to stand up against that odious trash.
It may be none of my business what goes on in the private lives of others, but as a wise man once said, “Character is defined by what you do when no one is looking.” Tell me, how’s your character?
