That was certainly the view of a few fans before the tragic deaths of 10 OSU family members.
Two of the team’s players, Nate Fleming and Daniel Lawson, and team manager Jared Weiberg were interested in more than basketball — they were students.
That’s why it’s such a fitting tribute to give these three the thing they were never allowed to receive — their diplomas.
The posthumous graduations of Nate, Dan and Jared won’t be attended by family and friends with anxious cameras in hand. Those three will never be able to walk across the stage, shake hands with President James Halligan and hold their diplomas in hand.
Those lives cut short won’t get to experience a lot of things about graduation that most of us someday will, but their ceremony will be attended, in spirit, by every fan who ever called himself a Cowboy.
We will always miss them, we will always revere them and we will never forget them. And now, in one more way, they will be forever connected to this school and all who love it.
