And in case you didn’t realize it, Stillwater may not be the most exciting place around, but if you like the outdoors, it can be fun.
Last year, I took up in-line skating. It has proven to be a great way to relax, exercise and just have fun.
I began going to Boomer Lake, and after a few bruises on the bottom, I can navigate the line of wheels beneath my feet fairly well.
My favorite part about in-line skating at Boomer Lake is the tranquility created by the setting.
I love to go as the sun sets on clear nights.
I cannot describe how relaxed I am when I am able to enjoy the breeze coming from the lake as I watch the stars emerge in the darkening sky.
I can always hear traffic and see others on the trail, but it seems to diminish when you relax and find your own world.
Lake McMurtry also is a great escape from the hustle and bustle of academia and work.
I would recommend getting a mountain bike if you don’t already have one, so you can enjoy Boomer’s challenging series of trails.
I like taking friends there when they are stressed out. There’s something calming about nature and getting away from problems, even if only temporarily.
Our campus also is nice this time of year, too.
Have you ever gone to the balcony on the west side of the Student Union and admired the art work of the formal gardens?
What about a late night study break around Theta Pond?
We each seek some sort of break from life without realizing that the simple act of appreciating your surroundings can provide it.
A lot of people, especially in Oklahoma, suffer from a plague of allergies.
Congestion, hayfever or watering eyes can wreak havoc on our appreciation for the outdoors. However, that is simple to overcome.
“Voodoo Village” has an array of medications other than amoxicillin, to help people overcome allergies. Claritin-D has worked wonders for me.
Some people even opt for allergy shots.
This is the best time of the year. Sure, the weather can change at any moment, but if it’s as nice as it is expected to be this week, enjoy it.
Remember those long weeks of ice-covered streets and house arrest because of the weather, and just enjoy it.
Get a pair of in-line skates, running shoes, a mountain bike or just a new pair of shorts and go outside.
I know you will love it. I think we could all use some time outdoors as tests and stress begin to peak, since spring also is the time for mid-terms, projects and graduation.
