In early January, I badgered the basketball sports information director to let me join the team on the CU trip. He said he did not think that would be a problem at all.
A short time later, I found out I had some friends in town that weekend and told the SID not to worry about me making the trip.
That is all that was said. Nothing else happened. So, it would not be right to say I was supposed to be on a plane that day because it never got that far.
Certainly, that story did not need to be made as big as it was, and I wrote these five paragraphs because looking people in the eye knowing that too much was made of my story had been tough.
Now, it is time to move on to something that is truly big news — the Cowboys’ basketball game tonight against Missouri.
What will happen tonight?
What will it be like when the teams take the floor for the shootaround and the student section is standing-room-only while the rest of the arena is barely a quarter full?
Will the noise during the game ever come close to ending? The rowdiest arena in the country will take on a surreal life tonight as fans come, not to be rowdy, but to yell because it is the only thing to do.
Every cheer will have a little sharper ring to it. Every cheer will come from deep in the still-heavy hearts of 13,611 Cowboy fans.
Will there be tears when the starters, and Eddie Sutton, are announced? Will there be more when OSU hits its first basket?
How many people will never think about sitting down?
Will there be any way to find the words to describe the game’s atmosphere?
Those questions will all be answered tonight. Everybody at Oklahoma State is looking forward to the answers.
Statistically speaking, there have been bigger games in Cowboy history. There is a great chance that it will not be the best-played game in OSU history. But, neither of those matter.
The fact is, tonight’s game means more to Oklahoma State University than any that has been played before.
Tonight’s game symbolizes strength — strength of the team, the university and the fans to overcome tragedy and move forward. The 10 Cowboys we cried for would not want it any other way.
Nothing OSU sports has ever done and nothing OSU sports will ever be comes close to what OSU sports is today.
Today, OSU sports represents strength that we all share, and questions that we all look forward to having answered.
