Actually, it reminded us of a lot of things.
We were reminded that Stillwater is the best town in America.
The country rallied around those who were hurt, but it started right here in Stillwater.
The people in this town reminded us that it is OK for grown men to cry around one another and hug each other. The people here reminded us that complete strangers can share in the same pain.
But, most of all, we were reminded that people care.
There are the exceptions. Nobody at Wednesday’s memorial service wants to think about the massive nitwit that felt the need to make a scene during the tribute to Pat Noyes.
Nobody around Oklahoma State wants to think about the fact that the national media has covered the tragedy, at best, far below what it should have been.
Wednesday’s memorial took a back seat to post-Super Bowl coverage on the national sports networks and in one respected national news publication.
Hundreds of inches of space in this newspaper and all we saw was a paragraph saying OSU adjusted its basketball schedule.
Maybe it was just a reminder that we are not at the center of the universe.
At any rate, any of those bad things were outweighed by the hundreds of thousands of people around the would who have come out to support us all.
You can’t run that through any kind of value meter or put it through a checkout stand, that is for sure.
Former players coming home just to offer comfort and support is always one of the most noble gestures in sports. The loyalty displayed by all of the ex-Cowboys who came home this week was just another reminder that people care.
There is other evidence of this as well. Benefit concerts, opponents willing to adjust schedules and rival schools wearing orange and black ribbons should prove this without a doubt.
So, while the last six days have not been easy on anybody, they have at least reminded us of several things. Several things that are important to all of us.
The feeling here is that Monday, when the Cowboys hit the court against Missouri, we will be reminded of one more thing about the people here in this place we call home.
When the arena that Iba built and that 10 of heaven’s newest guests helped renovate erupts like never before during the starting lineups, we’ll be reminded that there is still time for a lot of fun in life.
