Memorial service to be broadcast

Published: January 31, 2001

The broadcast will be fed live from the Gallagher-Iba Arena to the OSU-Tulsa Auditorium on the Tulsa campus.

The memorial service will begin at 3 p.m. this afternoon. Doors to the OSU-Tulsa Auditorium will open at 2:30 p.m.

“Many folks in the Tulsa area have been touched by this tragedy and would like to attend the memorial service,” said Gary Trennepohl, OSU-Tulsa president. “We want to make it as easy as possible for everyone who would like to pay their respects.”

Those who attend the OSU-Tulsa broadcast will be able to sign a large sympathy card for Coach Eddie Sutton, the OSU basketball team and others who were affected by the tragedy.

The OSU-Tulsa broadcast will provide another place for OSU supporters to honor those who were lost.

“There are a lot of OSU alumni, students and supporters in the Tulsa area, and not everyone is going to be able to make it to Stillwater,” said Mary Bea Drummond, director of communication services. “We wanted to make it easier for people in the Tulsa area to participate in the memorial service.”

Besides convenience, the service will also be an opportunity for OSU students, alumni and supporters to come together and lean on each other for support.

“This will be good for people who are part of and friends of the OSU family,” Drummond said. “People will be able to have the support of their friends around.”

The service will be broadcast on various Tulsa television stations, but the purpose of the OSU-Tulsa broadcast is to bring as much of the OSU family together as possible, Trennepohl said.

“We were saddened by the untimely death of members of our OSU family,” he said. “We wanted to try and provide an opportunity of OSU family to be together here.”

The broadcast will also demonstrate the OSU-Tulsa community’s support for OSU community in Stillwater.

“I think that this service is important,” Drummond said. “It shows how deeply OSU has impacted the Tulsa community. The service will provide a nice way for people to remember those who died.”
