Luinstra was working for Wichita State University as an assistant trainer when he was offered a job in the OSU Athletics Department.
“When he got the chance to go to OSU, he was kind of torn,” said Doug Vandersee, WSU assistant athletics director and head athletic trainer. “All of his family lived in Kansas — and he loved WSU — but OSU was offering football training and he knew he would need that to work for any major university.”
Luinstra, who was born on July 26, 1971, grew up in Augustus, Kan.
After graduation, Luinstra attended the University of Kansas where he met his wife, Carolyn, in 1989.
“I fell in love with him because he treated me so well, he was very selfless,” Carolyn Luinstra said. “He was such a good-natured person — he was silly-funny.”
Services for Luinstra are scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, 330 N.
