That is an impossible task. Nobody around the Cowboys will ever forget the radio call in 1995 after OSU defeated Massachusetts in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.
Nobody around the Cowboys will ever forget the author of that line — Bill Teegins.
Teegins, 48, died in Saturday’s plane crash. He was in his 10th year as the play-by-play voice of Cowboy basketball.
He was also the sports director of KWTV in Oklahoma City and had been named Oklahoma Sportscaster of the Year six times.
To the OSU basketball team, Teegins was family.
“With Bill, it was like he was a brother to us,” said OSU coach Eddie Sutton. “The other night before the game, we were laughing and telling jokes and teasing each other.
“Bill always had a smile on his face and didn’t mind you needling him. He’d needle you too. When I called his wife Saturday, I tried to let her know how much Bill meant to me.”
Teegins, who was from Edmond, is survived by his wife, Janis, and his daughter, Amanda.
Teegins had two families. He left behind relatives, but he also left behind the OSU athletic program.
Earlier this week, when OSU sports information director Steve Buzzard faced the media in the wake of the crash, he was asked to come up with something — anything — to describe Teegins.
Buzzard’s voice cracked. He took at least 30 seconds before he looked up at the faces of media members in Gallagher-Iba Arena’s press room and said the only words he could say about Bill Teegins.
“We lost a great friend,” Buzzard said.
“We lost a great friend.”
