Tracy Senat, director of communications and public relations, along with two interns, Amy Puckett — who got Cowboy.Gallery rolling — and Jonathan Cross — who has taken Puckett’s place — have all contributed to the making of this project.
The Redskin was produced from 1910 to 1991, when it was canceled because of financial reasons.
“The Redskin was losing money for a few years, because the number of yearbooks ordered wasn’t enough to break even financially,” said Fritz Wirt, general manager of the Redskin and the O’Collegian. “Many yearbooks that were paid for weren’t even picked up due to the lack of interest of the students.”
Faculty and alumni wanted the yearbooks for a different reason.
“The students didn’t take in consideration as the alumni did to look back,” said Marlan Nelson, ex-director of the OSU School of Journalism and Broadcasting.
Brooks Garner, associate professor of journalism and broadcasting, said, “I think it’s important and valuable for our university to have a historical record.”
In turn, www.Cowboy.Gallery will replace the Redskin - not based on money, but as an archive for alumni to find students, graduate students, and other alumni. It will be as easy as logging on a search engine, typing in a name and clicking on the search button. The archive would display the person’s information and picture.
“It’s going to go beyond the Redskin,” Senat said.Cowboy.Gallery will cover OSU in Stillwater, but it will also branch out for broader OSU experience such as OSU-Tulsa. “Residential halls, greek life and more than 300 clubs will be displayed,” Senat said. “More will be added in the future, but for now, the Alumni Association are just trying to get the ball rolling.”
Cross said, “I think it’s a great way to stay connected with people you went to school with, to know where they are, and how they’re doing.
“I think it will be a great information tool.”
Alumni will be able to go to www.Cowboy.Gallery and view the yearbook.
“In the future association members and non-members may be able to purchase a CD-ROM with Cowboy.Gallery on it, but that is still in the future plans,” Senat said.
She said any registered or official groups on campus are welcome to bring pictures and names, but others will be considered.
