Five-year-old Riley Williams claimed the Super Slide is his favorite part of the fair.
"I like it because you get to go really far down," he said after making two trips down with his father. Although the Super Slide is his favorite, he also seemed to like the fun house.
Inside the exhibit building, one might find quilts, jewelry, food, T-shirts, kitchenware and information about local organizations.
This is Velma Sanders’ 11th year to exhibit her oil paintings at the fair. Velma owns Countryside Studio, and her husband Tom runs Stillwater Gems, both of which have booths.
"I like the fair because you get to see all the people in the county — and we have good sales," Velma said. Another popular booth is Cinnamon Roasted Almonds. The smell of cinnamon wafts through the building, attracting hungry customers.
Cinnamon Roasted Almonds also sells espresso beans, chocolate cashews, plain roasted almonds and "balloon yo-yos," which are balloons filled with water attached to a rubber band.
"We’ve become a trademark," said John Horn, owner. "You can’t come to the fair without buying the nuts."The fair features about 70 vendors, 20 rides and 10 game booths, according to Sarah Hesser, Payne County Fair Board secretary.
It will be open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. until Saturday, with rides opening at 6 p.m. Upcoming events include a Lawn and Garden Tractor Pull at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, a Tractor Driving Contest at 10 a.m. on Saturday, a Pet Parade and Show at 6 p.m. on Saturday and entertainment on Saturday night.
Entertainers will be Rana McCoy & Students at 6 p.m., Chosen at 7:15 p.m., Oklahoma Steel Guitar Association at 8 p.m. and Tammy Retherford at 9 p.m.
