Emotions have no place at the polls

Published: August 31, 2000

The liberal agenda is almost just a humorous farce! For example, how many of you had the distinct pleasure of watching the Democratic National Convention? If you missed it, then you certainly missed some of the greatest theatrics ever to come out of a political convention.

By the way, I’ve got to first mention that the liberal spin here is absolutely humorous. Here, the liberals are painting the Republican National Convention as "smoke and mirrors" and a big showing, but it is the Democrats who maximized the use of theater.

Perhaps, the most overwhelming display of theater was the "kiss" by Al Gore on his wife, Tipper. For those of you who missed it, it was reminiscent of a high school prom kiss. Yes, Al Gore planted a high-school style kiss on his wife in front of the whole world.

Ladies and gentlemen, I should not need to explain this to you, but this kiss was nothing more than theater, a mere play on emotions. Most of us stalwart thinkers sat back and snorted arrogantly at this kiss.

We realized that it was show and that no one could ever be swayed by such a gesture. Yet, as surely as you are reading this column, there are people who were so moved by that kiss that they decided that they should cast their vote for Al Gore.

Can you believe that? I promise you, friends, that this is utter truth! I happened to be listening to talk radio when the host invited women to call in and admit the kiss swayed them.

Would you believe there were actually women out in the world who called in and admitted to feeling weak at the knees when Al kissed Tipper? I was dumfounded! The fact that there are people out there who would vote based entirely on emotion without giving consideration to issues is absolutely confounding. Of the seven women who called in, six of them were so moved that they determined in their mind that Gore would get their vote.

The last caller, however, was a woman who was practically embarrassed to be a woman after hearing the previous six women. She could not believe or understand what could be going on inside of their minds.

I, too, failed to see any logical thought process exhibited by the six victims of "the kiss." But, the radio host threw out a statistic, and immediately I thought to myself, "A ha! Now the pieces of the puzzle are coming together."

It turns out those women who were greatly moved by Gore’s kiss were either single or divorced, whereas the women who were unmoved were either happily married or involved in a very satisfying relationship. I think you candeduce where I’m going with this.

Folks, don’t get the wrong impression here. I’m not trying to "come down" on the feminine gender. I love women. The point I’m trying to make here is that a presidential election is a serious matter. We must not allow our emotions to dictate how we vote. Emotions, "the kiss," and like gibberish have absolutely nothing to do with foreign policy, the economy, taxation, and other such issues.

Of course, I can already hear the confused liberal arguing, "The kiss showed that he was deeply committed to his wife. That shows character." Well, hold on, top-speed. G.W. Bush loves his wife and is deeply committed to her as well. He didn’t need to plant a big, wet one on her to prove that to us, though. Furthermore, we already know that Bush is a man of character.

Gore, however, reeks of Clinton’s immoral behavior. I don’t think his selection of Lieberman will help Gore gain any ethical gravitas, either. But that is another topic for a later time.

Ladies and gentlemen, let’s use our brains, not our hearts, when we cast our vote this November. Emotions are as fickle as the changing phases of the moon. To vote based on emotion would be a grave mistake.

If you find that you are being led by emotion on your decision to vote for Gore, I urge you to strongly consider what you are doing.

If you feel you must vote, but absolutely hate Bush, then be wise and cast your vote for Ralph Nader.

Otherwise, you will waste your vote on the Democratic party, and we’ll have another four years of Clinton-Gore. We all know that is the last thing that this country needs. Don’t rely on feelings, but rely on thought. It makes sense.
