Just one spark

For many, the Fourth of July means fireworks. However, Stillwater has laws about where residents can and cannot shoot them.

Deputy City Manager Dan Blankenship said Stillwater law states fireworks are not to be set off in the city limits. Discharging fireworks within the city limits is punishable by up to a $500 fine and up to 90 days in jail.

Stillwater’s city limits are from about 32nd Avenue to Richmond Road and from Sangre Road to Brush Creek Road.

According to Article IV, Section 12-51 of Stillwater’s Municipal Code, fireworks include sparklers, Roman candles and firecrackers, in addition to “other fireworks of like construction, and any fireworks containing any explosive or flammable compound, or any tablets or other devices containing any explosive substance.”

According to its Web site, Lake Carl Blackwell prohibits discharging fireworks in its recreational area.

Leaving the net

Longtime Oklahoma State women’s tennis coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski announced on June 24 his retirement as coach of the Cowgirl program.

Lubicz-Majewski directed the women’s tennis team for the past 20 seasons, compiling a record of 283-191 during his tenure. The program’s all-time leader in victories, he led OSU to 15 winning seasons and five NCAA Tournament berths.

“I appreciate all of the friendships I have made over the past 20 years. It has been a great experience,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “I have learned a lot from a great group of coaches that includes Mike Holder, John Smith, Eddie Sutton and James Wadley.

“I will be a Cowboy for life and will always have orange in my heart because OSU is a wonderful place and I will dearly miss it,” he said. “I look forward to following the Cowgirl tennis program in the future.”

A native of Warsaw, Poland, Lubicz-Majewski won Big Eight titles in each of his first two seasons, capturing the league crown in 1990 and 1991. Both seasons resulted in him earning league coach of the year honors.

All in the family

With a friendly smile on his face, Martin Wallen entered his office, which was richly stuffed with book volumes of a variety of sizes.

Bounce, an adult Sealyham terrier, obediently followed her master inside.

In his office, the professor of literature and English honors coordinator described his encounters with his nephew, Adam Lambert, who rose to fame on the Fox TV series “American Idol.”

Lambert made it to the top two of season eight of the singing competition.

Without hesitation, Wallen said he knows there is no other human on Earth besides Lambert who would display his real self and personality so well in public.

NASA awards student grant to age Mars

NASA awarded a $496,000 grant to develop a device that could determine the age of Mars.

Regina DeWitt, a research assistant to Stephen McKeever in the department of physics, was born and raised in Germany and completed her undergraduate in physics before attending Heidelburg University to study luminescent dating.

“I was at a conference in Reno and I was looking for a post-doc position and I met (McKeever) who was looking for a post-doc, and it just worked,” DeWitt said.

DeWitt’s project involves a method called Optically Stimulated Luminescence that measures the radiation damage to minerals.

“When the minerals are exposed to light, that heat helps to heal the radiation damage, and at the same time the mineral emits life,” DeWitt said. “For example, if the mineral is exposed to blue, the mineral will emit UV light.”

Fernandez sets 5k American junior record

Oklahoma State track and field standout German Fernandez turned in the best 5,000-meter time by any American junior athlete in history Friday, finishing in 13.25.46 at the 2009 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

That time easily beats the previous record of 13:29.98, set by Stanford’s Chris Derrick earlier this year.

It was also enough for a fifth-place finish in the race, which included the top athletes from across the country. It was the highest finish by any collegiate athlete in the event.

Fernandez, who just capped a remarkable freshman season for the Cowboys by winning the 1,500-meter NCAA championship, also holds the junior world record and NCAA record in the indoor mile, as well as several Oklahoma State school records.
